13.1 WHY IS EARTH A UNIQUE PLANET?
There may be billions of planets in the universe, but Earth is the only one where life, as we know it, is known to exist. In this chapter we shall try to understand what makes our planet special and what threatens the conditions that support life on it. Earth is a planet that orbits the Sun, along with seven other planets. Images of Earth taken by satellites, including the Earth Observation Satellites launched by ISRO, help scientists to study plants on land, tiny organisms in the ocean, ocean temperature and many other features.
All the mountains, rivers, forests, animals and people are found on a very thin outer layer of the Earth called the crust. Below the crust lie the upper and lower mantle, and the outer and inner core. If the Earth were the size of an apple, the crust would be about as thin as the skin of the apple. It is this thin layer that supports all life.
The Earth has an atmosphere that contains the air we breathe, water in liquid form on its surface and soil in which crops can be grown. Its distance from the Sun keeps its temperature within a range suitable for living beings.
