12.2 SURFACE AREA OF A COMBINATION OF SOLIDS
A large number of objects used in everyday life are not single solids at all but are built up by joining two or more of the familiar shapes studied in earlier classes – the cuboid, the cylinder, the cone and the sphere. A circus tent, for instance, is usually a cylinder with a cone resting on it; a child's top may be a cone attached to a hemisphere; and a medicine capsule is a cylinder closed at both ends by hemispheres. When the surface area of such an object is required, it is not correct to add up the total surface areas of the separate solids, since the portion of each surface lying along the joint is no longer exposed.
Consider the tent described above. Only the slanting curved surface of the conical top, the curved surface of the cylindrical part and the circular floor can be seen from outside, so the required area is obtained by adding exactly these three quantities.
Total surface area = curved surface of cone + curved surface of cylinder + base
The volume behaves differently: when two solids are joined, no space is lost, so the volume of the combined solid is simply the total of the volumes of its parts.
