1.1 THE FLOWER AND PRE-FERTILISATION EVENTS
Flowers have long been part of human life and culture; they are offered in worship, exchanged as gifts, used for decoration and associated with occasions of both joy and sorrow. For the biologist, however, the flower is above all the reproductive structure of the angiosperm, the place where gametes are formed and fertilisation takes place.
The appearance of a flower is the end of a long series of changes inside the plant. Under the influence of hormones, the growing tip of the shoot changes its pattern of development, a floral primordium is formed and an inflorescence bearing floral buds develops. Inside the bud, the male and female reproductive parts – the androecium and the gynoecium – are formed.
The androecium is made up of stamens. Each stamen has a slender stalk, the filament, which bears at its tip an anther that is usually two-lobed, each lobe having two chambers. The gynoecium consists of one or more pistils, each made of an ovary, a style and a stigma. A typical flower also has two outer whorls, the calyx and corolla, which protect the inner parts and attract pollinators.
