Class 9 Social Science Short Notes 2026-27 is a printed, full-colour revision book for CBSE Class 9 students. It turns the new NCERT Class 9 Social Science textbook (Understanding Society: India and Beyond) into 98 pages of handwritten-style short notes: history, geography, political science and economics in short highlighted notes with maps, timelines and comparison tables.

  • Complete syllabus: all 15 chapters, including Understanding Social Science, Democracy, Oceans and Life and From Ideas to Startups.
  • Built for quick revision: one topic per page, key terms highlighted, diagrams drawn next to the line they explain.
  • Exam focus: written for school exams and a strong base for Class 10 boards, strictly as per the latest syllabus.
  • Printed book, 98 full-colour pages. Not a PDF. Delivered all over India.
  • Created by a district topper and NIT graduate.
More about this book

Most students read the textbook once and run out of time for a second revision. This short notes book is made for that gap: it keeps only what the exam asks, in the same order as the NCERT chapters, so you can revise the full syllabus three or four times before the exam.

    SOCIAL SCIENCE · CHAPTER 1332

    13.1 WHAT IS GOVERNANCE?

Voting in elections is an important part of democracy, but it is not enough by itself. A strong democracy also needs institutions that function transparently, representatives who are responsible to the people, and the continuous participation of citizens in public life. The term governance refers to the process by which decisions are made, implemented and monitored in the public interest. It describes the way in which a country, a state, a city, a village, a school or any organisation is managed.

Governance is different from government. The government consists of the institutions that exercise political authority – the legislature, the executive and the judiciary. Governance, on the other hand, is the process of decision-making and implementation, and it includes not only the government but also citizens, the media, civil society and private organisations. While the term government tells us who governs, governance tells us how governing is carried out.

Consider what happens when heavy rain floods a town. The municipal corporation clears the drains, the public works department repairs the roads, the police manage traffic, schools inform parents and health workers try to prevent disease. No single department can solve the problem alone; coordination among all of them is needed.
