8.5 कोशिका झिल्ली एवं कोशिका भित्ति
कोशिका झिल्ली इतनी पतली होती है कि साधारण प्रकाश सूक्ष्मदर्शी से इसकी आंतरिक संरचना नहीं देखी जा सकती। इसकी बनावट के बारे में विस्तृत जानकारी इलेक्ट्रॉन सूक्ष्मदर्शी के विकास के बाद ही मिल सकी। लाल रक्त कोशिकाओं की झिल्ली के रासायनिक विश्लेषण से पता चला कि झिल्ली का मुख्य भाग लिपिड और प्रोटीन से बना होता है, तथा कुछ मात्रा में कार्बोहाइड्रेट भी उपस्थित रहते हैं।
झिल्ली के लिपिड मुख्यतः फॉस्फोलिपिड होते हैं, जो दो परतों में इस प्रकार सजे रहते हैं कि उनके जल-प्रेमी ध्रुवीय सिरे बाहर की ओर और जल-विरोधी पूँछें भीतर की ओर रहती हैं। प्रोटीन अणु इस द्विपरत की सतह पर भी पाए जाते हैं और इसके भीतर धँसे हुए भी; इनके आधार पर परिधीय और अंतर्निहित प्रोटीन का भेद किया जाता है।
झिल्ली की संरचना को समझाने वाला सबसे स्वीकृत मॉडल तरल किर्मीर मॉडल है, जिसके अनुसार लिपिड परत अर्ध-तरल होती है और प्रोटीन इसमें इधर-उधर खिसक सकते हैं।
