CBSE Class 12 Physics 2026-27: Unit-wise Weightage and a 14-Day Formula Revision Plan

Quick answer: The CBSE Class 12 Physics theory paper is for 70 marks. EM Waves and Optics (18) and Magnetism, EMI and AC (17) together carry 35 marks, followed by Electrostatics and Current Electricity (16), Dual Nature, Atoms and Nuclei (12) and Semiconductor Electronics (7).

Class 12 Physics is formula-heavy: almost every numerical depends on one or two equations and on knowing exactly when they apply. That makes it the subject where a good formula sheet saves the most time in the final weeks.

Unit-wise weightage for Class 12 Physics 2026-27

Units Chapters Marks
Electrostatics & Current Electricity Electric Charges and Fields; Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance; Current Electricity 16
Magnetism, EMI & AC Moving Charges and Magnetism; Magnetism and Matter; Electromagnetic Induction; Alternating Current 17

The formula-heavy chapters to start with

  • Ray Optics: mirror and lens formulae, magnification, lens-maker’s formula, power of combined lenses, refraction through a prism. Sign convention mistakes cost more marks here than anywhere else.
  • Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance: potential of a point charge and dipole, capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor with and without a dielectric, series and parallel combinations, and energy stored.
  • Current Electricity: drift velocity, Kirchhoff’s laws, the Wheatstone bridge and the metre bridge.
  • Alternating Current: rms values, reactance, impedance of an LCR circuit, resonance and power factor.
  • Dual Nature and Atoms: Einstein’s photoelectric equation, de Broglie wavelength and the Bohr model energy levels – short, formula-based and very scoring.

A 14-day formula revision plan

Day Chapter
1 Electric Charges and Fields
2 Electrostatic Potential and Capacitance
3 Current Electricity
4 Moving Charges and Magnetism
5 Magnetism and Matter
6 Electromagnetic Induction
7 Alternating Current
8 Electromagnetic Waves
9 Ray Optics and Optical Instruments
10 Wave Optics
11 Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter
12 Atoms
13 Nuclei
14 Semiconductor Electronics

For each day: revise the chapter’s formulas (20 minutes), write them out from memory (10 minutes), then solve 8–10 numericals (60 minutes). After 14 days, repeat the cycle faster, two chapters a day, and spend the saved days on full sample papers.

The Class 12 Physics Formula Sheet 2026-27 follows exactly this one-chapter-a-day order, with every formula, unit and condition on colour-coded pages. Science students can pick the PCM or PCMB set to cover Chemistry, Maths and Biology too.

Frequently asked questions

How many marks is Class 12 Physics theory?

70 marks for theory and 30 for practicals.

Which unit has the highest weightage?

EM Waves and Optics, with 18 marks, closely followed by Magnetism, EMI and AC with 17.

Is a formula sheet useful for JEE and NEET as well?

Yes. The Class 12 chapters form about half of the JEE and NEET physics syllabus, so the same sheet works for both board and entrance revision.
